🧠 Core idea: none of these tricks wins a game on its own; all of them together do. Armies with assigned roles, dodged mangonel shots, two scouts and villagers that never walk: it all adds up.
This guide gathers the fundamentals that separate someone who can execute an opening from someone who starts winning games: how a Castle Age army actually fights, how to squeeze vision, and how to scrape villager time out of every motion.

Every Unit Has a Job
Before any big fight, look at both armies and hand out tasks. With a typical Castle Age composition — Springalds, Mangonels, Crossbowmen, Spearmen, Men-at-Arms and Horsemen — the split looks like this:

Two shots are enough to wreck an enemy Springald or Mangonel; if four fire at the same target, half the damage is wasted. Split into groups of two and give each pair a different target before the fight.

Three control groups help: melee infantry, Horsemen, and ranged together with siege. And when the opponent has Mangonels, put your ranged units in staggered formation: as they spread out, every enemy shot is worth less. The difference between fighting like this and slamming your army in with one click is enormous: you win engagements you would otherwise never win.

Dodge the Mangonel Shot
The Mangonel fires predictively: it aims at where you are going, not where you are. The trick — an old friend to veterans of the series — is to walk in one direction and, just as the shot leaves, turn the other way: the stone lands where you would have been.

Walking straight into siege
❌ Move your army in a straight line toward the Mangonel — the predictive shot lands right on top of you.
✅ Walk one way, then turn the other just as the shot leaves; the stone lands where you would have been, and you close in barely losing health.
It is hard to pull off at first, but it lets you close in on siege while barely losing health, and there are plenty of in-game situations where it makes the difference. Start practicing it now.

Two Scouts: Vision and Stolen Sheep
The norm is opening with a single scout, but on some maps — Prairie is the classic example — and in certain matchups the second one pays for itself, and any opening can be adapted to include it. The logic:

Mirrored spawns
Five or six Sheep spawn around each base, and spawns are mirrored: your opponent sits on your diagonal.

First scout — go raid
Heads straight for the enemy corner, sweeps behind their base stealing Sheep, and continues toward the unexplored edge of the map. It will not come home for a long time.

Second scout — come home
Sweeps your half close to the map's axis and returns early with your own Sheep, so the Town Center never runs out of food.
In a little over two minutes you have almost the whole map revealed and, usually, quite a few more Sheep than your opponent. Stealing them from a civilization that lives off Sheep is direct economic damage without firing an arrow — and if yours thrives on them too, double prize.

Villagers That Never Walk
Maximizing what your Villagers gather means minimizing what they walk. Three habits:

Move the first Sheep inward right as the Villagers start eating it: gathering with zero travel. Order a Sheep to cross an empty Town Center and stop it once inside; then right-click the rest onto it.

Right-click the resource on the side you want first, garrison the Villagers, and on Back to Work they pop out on that side, skipping half the walk. (The normal eject always dumps them on the same side.)

A Villager carrying food who constructs a lumber camp deposits that load when it finishes. To switch resources, just order the new building directly — the carried load delivers itself.
